No 49

No.49 Castle Street
No.49

street map

No 49 - Only fairly superficial changes are evident from the photos I have seen - change in windows, addition of decorative frieze and textured render to ground floor.

The largest actual difference seems to be the front door which is taller now than it was in the earlier photos.

I suspect that the left hand ground floor window was originally a simple window and the bay is a later addition, but have no idea when it was added.

One point of question: the right hand ground floor window seems to be too close to the end of the building, there does not appear to be space for the end wall of the house!?

where is the end wall?
where is the end wall?

Speculation...

I have seen it suggested that this building was originally linked to the adjoining house on the left (No.51) as part of a 'hall house', but I have not seen evidence myself. It does seem possible because, although they are now of a different scale, it can be seen that the first floor cill levels are the same, so it is quite possible that they were similar, and the roof of No.51 has been substantially raised, but was originally at the same or similar height to this house.

showing possible connected levels

Indeed, a detail from the 1750 illustrative map (below) does show the two with level roofs. I'm not sure how much reliance we can put on that much detail, but, although it looks unlikely with the current differences, perhaps this was so?
