No.42-44

street map

No 42-44 - The current 42-44 building replaced an earlier building. I am not sure exactly when, but assume it was in the first half of the 1900s - after 1915 judging by the 1915 photo.

The 1895 map shows there were originally three cottages that were demolished.

I have read that the previous building had been the local 'poor house'. There was, in 1832, a report to parliament about the poor of Nether Stowey, prepared by Thomas Poole, which, according to a *paper I have seen, included: "According to Poole there was no workhouse in Stowey but there was a house in which some infirm poor lived and received a weekly allowance of money."

(*Paper by Martin McDonagh re - Nether Stowey 1832: a Snapshot of the Poor and the Poor Laws in one Somersetshire parish taken by Thomas Poole magistrate.)

This would seem to be confirmed by a map from 'British History Online', which shows this as the location of the poorhouse. Whether it was all three or just one, I don't know.
