The plaque on this building states the date as 1903. So I assume
that was when the major amendments took place.
We can see from the earlier photo (pre-1903) that what is now the
post office was then a single story lean-to in the gap on the corner
of Castle street and Lime street, between the other buildings.

Photo from pre-1903
At the time that the current post office building was erected, it
seems to have included major rebuilding of that end of the previous
Castle street building. We can see from the old photo that there was
previously a large chimney, which is no longer there, so I assume
that end of the building was completely rebuilt with the now post
office building adjoining it.
It would seem that the first building in Lime street was also
demolished at that time, and became part of this new enlarged
building.
Temperance hotel early 1900s
An early photo shows that the new building was initially used as a
temperance hotel - the current premises are now licensed to sell
alcohol - progress?
Photo from 1950s
The photo above shows that by the 1950s, the two small dormer
windows had been added in the roof. This also shows the wall
on the Castle street frontage was initially rendered, the render was
later removed to expose the stone. This has left the brick quoins
around the windows and door standing proud away from the stone; the
original render would have been more or less flush with the brick
faces.
The exposed stone now shows there is a marked difference in stone
used, with a roughly diagonal join just to the left of the door (see
photo at top of page). The older stone to the left was lighter in
colour with the new a much richer dark brown colour. Some of the
darker stones were also used in the panels below the windows,
presumably when the new windows and lintels were installed.
